The United Arab Emirates is observing a period of mourning following the death of Sheikh Ahmed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, brother of Dubai’s ruler. This 10-day mourning period has been declared in Dubai, impacting various sectors as the nation reflects on Sheikh Ahmed’s contributions to the UAE’s development.
Sheikh Ahmed, who passed away on Monday, was a prominent figure known for his roles as deputy chairman of Dubai Police and chairman of ARM Holding. He played a significant role in the UAE’s sports sector, particularly through the establishment of the Jebel Ali Racecourse in 1990 and his long-term presidency at Al Wasl Sports Club. His passing marks the end of an era for Dubai’s sporting and civic communities.
His funeral service was held at the Zabeel Grand Mosque, with the burial taking place at Umm Hurair Cemetery in Dubai. The service was attended by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the Rulers and Crown Princes of the Emirates, who all gathered to offer their condolences to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.
The leaders, including Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi of Sharjah, Sheikh Hamad bin Mohammed Al Sharqi of Fujairah, Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mualla of Umm Al Quwain, and Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al Khaimah, came together at the Zabeel Majlis. They paid tribute to Sheikh Ahmed, recalling his lasting impact on the nation since its formation.
As the UAE mourns the loss of a respected leader, the country’s focus remains on honoring his legacy and the indelible mark he has left on numerous facets of Emirati society. The period of mourning is a testament to his influence and the deep respect he commanded across the Emirates.
