The recent state visit by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to Germany underscores the strengthening strategic alliance between the two nations. This partnership, which has evolved over several decades, encompasses political, economic, energy, and cultural domains. Diplomatic ties between the UAE and Germany were first established in 1972, and since then, the bilateral relationship has seen substantial growth, particularly in trade and investment. In the previous year, bilateral trade reached over Dh57 billion ($15.52 billion), positioning the UAE as Germany’s primary trading partner in the Gulf region.
Approximately 2,000 German companies are currently operating in the UAE, including prominent corporations such as BMW, Siemens, ThyssenKrupp, and Deutsche Bahn. The energy sector has also seen increased collaboration, with both countries working together on projects related to renewable energy, climate action, decarbonization, and energy security. In 2022, the two nations signed an agreement aimed at enhancing energy security and industrial cooperation, which includes the supply of UAE liquefied natural gas to Germany and joint initiatives focused on clean energy and climate solutions.
The partnership between the UAE and Germany extends well beyond the realms of trade and energy. There is a robust history of collaboration in research, technology, infrastructure, and cultural exchanges. In 2004, political ties were formally elevated through a strategic partnership agreement, which covers areas such as regional security, economic cooperation, and research, further solidifying the bond between the two countries.
Despite global political and economic uncertainties, the relationship between the UAE and Germany remains resilient. Both nations continue to explore and expand cooperation across various strategic sectors, demonstrating the lasting strength and adaptability of their partnership. This enduring alliance is a testament to their shared commitment to addressing global challenges and fostering mutual growth and development.
