Instagram Encryption Gone: The Moment Privacy Advocates Must Seize

by admin477351

Meta’s removal of end-to-end encryption from Instagram direct messages, effective May 8, 2026, is a setback. But setbacks can become catalysts. The change was disclosed through a quiet help page update. Privacy advocates are being called to seize this moment and use it to build a stronger and more effective movement for digital rights.

Encryption on Instagram was introduced in 2023 as an opt-in feature following Zuckerberg’s 2019 commitment. Its removal reflects the current weakness of privacy advocacy relative to the institutional power of law enforcement and the commercial power of major tech companies. But that weakness is not permanent.

After May 8, all Instagram DMs will be accessible to Meta. The immediate response from privacy advocates is one of disappointment. But the moment also presents an opportunity: to build public awareness, to engage regulators, and to make the case for encryption as a non-negotiable standard.

Law enforcement agencies including the FBI, Interpol, and national bodies in Australia and the UK had achieved their goal. Child safety advocates won an important victory. Australia reportedly saw the feature deactivated before the global deadline.

Digital Rights Watch is calling on the privacy community to seize the moment. Tom Sulston argued that the removal of Instagram’s encryption should be a rallying point for everyone who cares about digital rights. He and others are mobilizing for sustained advocacy that goes beyond reacting to decisions that have already been made and begins shaping the decisions of the future.
