Legal experts have highlighted the consequences for individuals who use unauthorized satellite decoders or receivers to access encrypted sports channels without permission. Such violations could lead to fines ranging from Dh10,000 to Dh100,000, in addition to possible jail time. Meanwhile, those involved in the manufacturing, selling, or distribution of piracy devices may be subject to even harsher penalties, with fines reaching up to Dh700,000 and the possibility of prison terms.
The issue of digital piracy gained further attention after Dubai Police arrested a group accused of hacking into encrypted TV channels and unlawfully rebroadcasting World Cup matches via websites and streaming devices. This crackdown underscores the ongoing efforts by authorities to dismantle illegal operations and enforce the protection of broadcasting rights.
Cybersecurity experts have noted that the increasing costs of subscriptions and the fragmentation of streaming services have contributed to the rise in piracy.
