In a significant leadership reshuffle at Google DeepMind, co-founder Sir Demis Hassabis will step down from his role as chief executive. Hassabis, who has been at the helm since the company’s inception in 2010, is transitioning to become the chair of the organization while also taking on the role of chief scientist at Alphabet, Google’s parent company. This move allows Hassabis to devote more attention to the pursuit of long-term artificial intelligence research and the advancement of artificial general intelligence. He will also maintain his position as chief executive of Isomorphic Labs, a DeepMind spin-off focused on drug discovery.

Koray Kavukcuoglu, the current chief technology officer of DeepMind, will assume the position of head of the organization, holding the title of senior vice-president. Hassabis expressed that this transition would enable him to concentrate more on the broader development of advanced AI technologies and ensure their benefits are directed toward humanity.

These leadership changes coincide with the departure of several prominent AI engineers from Google. Among those leaving are Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, who are setting out to establish a new venture, Discovery Loop. This startup aims to delve into machine learning, science, and engineering research, highlighting the growing dynamism and competition within the AI sector.

The shift in leadership and the exit of key figures occur amid an increasingly competitive landscape for AI development. Google is facing formidable challenges from other industry players such as OpenAI and Anthropic, both of which have made notable strides in AI models and coding technologies. As the race for advanced artificial intelligence heats up, these developments mark a pivotal moment for Google’s AI division as it endeavors to solidify its standing in the evolving field.
