Al Maktoum International Airport in Dubai is embarking on an ambitious project to construct a 50-kilometre autonomous people mover network. This expansive system is designed to transport passengers across the airport’s vast complex, featuring nine stations initially. The construction timeline anticipates completion by December 2031, setting the stage for the airport’s first phase to open in 2032. Future expansions will increase the number of stations to 14 as additional phases of the airport development are realized.
Once operational, this network is poised to become the world’s largest automated people mover system, surpassing the capabilities of current systems in places like Dallas Fort Worth and New York’s JFK airports. The project is a significant component of the airport’s broader development plan, which aims to accommodate up to 260 million passengers and handle 12 million tonnes of cargo annually. The initial phase will introduce the West Terminal, Concourse 1, and the new people mover, effectively doubling the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 130 million.
In addition to the people mover network, Al Maktoum International Airport will integrate wider rail connectivity to enhance its transportation infrastructure. A key element of this will be the Airport Express Link, which will connect Al Maktoum International with Dubai International Airport. Furthermore, future plans include linking this network to Etihad Rail and the Dubai Metro, ensuring seamless transit options for passengers and cargo alike.
The strategic development of Al Maktoum International Airport is set to establish Dubai as a major global aviation hub.
